Dedicated Jess is above bog standard

- Stephen Houston

A new loo attendant did not want to let her customers down.

And when she realised they were in need of a baby changing unit at the busy seafront lavs she provided her own.

Kindly Jess McDougall, 42, dug deep into her own pockets to provide the triple- deck facility.

It now takes pride of place in the ladies’ loo at Troon South Beach.

Ayr mum Lauren Wyllie had said she found it “ridiculous” there was nowhere to change her child.

She said: “The beach was packed and 80 per cent of the people had young kids. I had to change my daughter on the grass across from the toilets as it was more discreet than anywhere else but it was still in front of a crowd of people.

“I’m a bit shocked and it’s stupid this hasn’t been put in place already. It’s more the tourists I feel for when they bundle their family into their car.

“You never know. We might get one for the summer holidays.”

Jess rapidly responded with her DIY solution.

She bought the Brevi changing system and padlocked it to the wall for security.

Similar units can cost more than £ 100.

Jess said: “I am the new female attendant at the toilets. I just wanted to help out and I bought one.”

Hubby George thanked dozens of well- wishers who praised her initiative.

He said: “We both work for the council and take pride in our work, Jess at the toilets and me at Marr College and Loans Hall.

“We like to go out our way to help, even if it is putting out water for the dogs. A big thank you all from the both of us.”

The nearest council- run baby facilities are in the library loo across the road - but there is no sign at the seafront saying so.

On Tuesday it appeared Jess’s move had shamed the council into action.

Lavatory supremo David Burns said: “Our hard- working staff have the best interests of customers at heart and we always encourage constructive feedback.

“We’ll be installing permanent baby changing facilities in the St Meddan’s male and female toilets by the end of the month.

“This will help cater for current demand while responding to the needs of both local people and tourists.”
