Trip of a lifetime

- Mike Wilson

School pals Hannah Mitchell and Amelia Jones are planning the adventure of a lifetime – to help orphans in Sri Lanka.

The two students will set out in July and spend two weeks working in orphanages and care centres.

Amelia, 18, was head girl at Kyle Academy where Hannah, 17, was deputy head.

They hit upon the idea last summer and have since been fundraising for the £ 4000 needed for the trip.

Ayr girl Hannah, who is off to Strathclyde University to study mechancial engineering, said: “Working with youngsters and helping them have a safe and comfortable environment is something we have always wanted to do.

“While there, we will teach English to the children and help with renovating jobs so they can live and play in the environment they deserve.”

Amelia, from Coylton, is planning to study acting and drama.

The hard working girls will be assisted on the venture by Projects Abroad, who will arrange for them to stay with a host family.

To raise the needed cash, they have held bake sales, hosted Hallowe’en parties, taken part in a sponsored kickathon with Mushasi Karate Club and organised a Valentine’s lollipop delivery service.

Their latest venture will be a race night at Ayr’s Pro Soccer on Friday, June 3 at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £ 5 and on sale from Jennie Campbell School of Dance. The girls are also looking for sponsors to buy a horse for £ 5 before the event.

They ask people to email their interest at racenightsrilanka1@ gmail. com
