First year Belmont Academy pupil Rachel Gilchrist has enjoyed considerable success recently in a number of baton twirling competitions.

After winning the Scottish area championships in February, Rachel competed in the National British Baton Twirling Championships in London. Despite very strong competition Rachel came back with three national titles for solo twirl, dance twirl and fancy strut. A number of Belmont pupils recently participated in a junior mathematics competition in the school.

The following pupils were successful -

Best in school: Hannah Brown; Best in year ( S1): Theo Vollam; Best in year ( S2): Hannah Brown; Gold certificate: Hannah Brown.

Silver certificate: Theo Vollam, Karl Hartmann, James Fulton and Charis Gormley.

Bronze certificate: Anna Hodge, Lauren Espie, Ruby Armstrong, Roy McGuinness, Rose Saville and Cameron Reid. A group of S3 pupils at Belmont Academy recently organised and hosted an event as part of the Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce initiative.

The class have been learning about Sikhism and held a Langar ( Sikh free kitchen) for S1 pupils. They invited Sukhcharan Kaur and Bakhshish Singh from Glasgow Gurdwara to speak at the event.

They gave a great presentation about Sikhism and the Langar. During the presentation S1 pupils had an opportunity to try some vegetable pakora, lentil dahl and chapattis kindly provided by Ayr India and the home economics department.

The S3 pupils who organised the event are very pleased with the outcome and hope the S1 pupils have learned from and enjoyed this experience.

The S3 pupils are also hoping to visit the Gurdwara in Glasgow in the near future.
