Well done as cycle duo show their form

Ayr Roads/ Harry Fairbairn Cycling Club duo Janet Erskine and Greg Templeton are in hot form.

The city centre televised cycle race series arrived in Scotland when Motherwell hosted the second round of the Pearl Izumi Race Tour Series with pro teams from around the UK in action.

The series was preceded by support races promoted by local Scottish cycling clubs. Janet was third in the women’s race while Greg finished well in the men’s event.

On Thursday night, in wet conditions, seven members competed in the evening 10 Mile Time Trial, won by Alastair McGibbon in 23 mins 03 secs, followed by Alex McAllister in 23: 35. Other times: Brian Yates 24: 11, Calum McDonald 24: 41, Duncan McArthur 25: 28, Tom G- Hill 26: 13, Raymond Bruce 27: 43.

On Sunday, Fullarton Wheelers promoted the Bill Moore Memorial 10 Mile Time Trial on the Irvine course.

Roads fielded nine riders with Kenny Armstrong seeded third while Toni McIntosh and Lynne Wardrop were also hoping to do well.

Kenny was third in 20 mins 56 secs, only two seconds from second.

Kenny was fastest Ayrshire rider with Darren Kean ( Fullarton) closely behind with a 21: 05. Winner was Chris Smart ( GTR Racing Team) in 20: 02.

Toni McIntosh was second in the women’s event, only nine seconds behind Catriona Gunn of Sandy Wallace Cycles, Edinburgh. Toni and Lynne Wardrop were first ladies team, with Lynne registerin­g 25: 14.

Other Roads times: Alex McAllister 22: 34, Alastair McGibbon 22: 53, Jody Gerrard 22: 58, Robert Kelly 24: 00, Duncan McArthur 24: 33 pb, Harry Brawley 26: 28 ( delayed start due to mechanical problems).

Janet Erskine, riding in the Scottish Women’s Road Race Championsh­ip at West Calder, was 21st against the finest in Scotland.

This Sunday, Roads hosts the latest round of the South West Road Race Championsh­ips. The Straiton Struggle Road Race rolls out of Straiton at 12pm and covers five laps of a nine mile loop towards Kirkmichae­l and Crosshill.

Organiser Scott Maclean has assembled a fantastic field of 60. Ayr’s own road race champion, Simon Woodliff, is capable of taking the win while 2014 runner- up, Greg Templeton in also the field.

On the same day, Roads members take part in the third edition of UK’s highest Cycle Sportive, The Three Pistes. This event covers 102 miles and nearly 10,000 feet of climbing from Pitlochry, Glenshee, The Lecht and Cairngorm.

The weekend of June 4 and 5 will be the biggest on the Ayr club’s calendar of 2016. Roads will promote the Scottish National 25 Mile Time Trial Championsh­ips, on the Saturday when elite competitor­s from all over Scotland will bid to gain national honours.

The following day, Roads clubman Brian Yates from Dalmelling­ton represents GB in the World Duathlon Championsh­ip in Spain. Brian finished 11th last year in his category of the World Duathlon Championsh­ip in Australia.

Two members travel to Cape Wrath while another two head to the Mont Ventoux Cycle Sportive in Provence, France.
