Ayro stars are making a Marc

- Grant Young

Ayrodynamic Tri Club star Marc Auchie starred at the ‘ Loch Loman’ triathlon festival at Loch Lomond.

Temperatures were so cold that competitors wore neoprene socks, gloves and hats, normally banned in races, due to water at 10 degrees.

Despite the difficulties of the swim, young Marc gave his best ever performance, to win the sprint race outright. Having just stepped up from junior to senior, Marc is going from strength to strength.

His father, and club coach Davie, produced a typically battling effort to finish fourth overall in the standard event – 1500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run.

In the middle distance 70.3 race, Alastair Ness made a comeback from knee surgery to finish comfortably and put down a marker for his Iron Man race in Roth, Germany in July. Tommy Turner also finished well in the longer event.

Four members took part in the pool- based Aberfeldy Sprint. Angus Peden, who has been showing his bike strength in club TTs, was first home in 1hour and 15 mins, taking 11th place overall.

New member Karl Owens finished just a minute and a half behind in 17th. Supervet Tom Reid was 80th in 1 hour 36 and Mark Gore, in his first race of the season, was 118th in 1 hour 54 mins.

David McNamee, in just his second season concentrating on longer events, was third in the Lanzarote Iron Man, the hardest event of its type in the world. He was only four minutes down on winner Jesse Thomas ( USA).

Second was triathlon legend and world champion Jan Frodeno from Germany. David was less than two minutes behind in 8 hours and 46 mins.

Apart from substantial prize money, David has also nailed his place for the Hawaii Iron Man in October, the world championship event for the sport.
