Theatre double set for Ayrshire stages

- Michael Reynolds

A double- header with two world famous theatre productions will make it a sizzling summer on stage.

Peter Pan heads to Ayr Town Hall on Wednesday, July 6 with a blockbuster production of Sherlock Holmes’ most famous adventure, The Hound of The Baskervilles, coming to Culzean Castle on Saturday, July 9.

The shows are produced by awardwinning outdoor theatre group Chapterhouse, with some of the top names in UK theatre working on the productions.

Peter Pan director Rebecca Gadsby said: “Peter Pan has been an absolute joy to work on; for few of us ‘ adults’ get the opportunity to delve into childishness and use our imagination.

“Spending days imagining pirate ships, crocodiles, fairies and mermaids has been a refreshing break from the usual historical research and character psychologies.

“This show does not do all the work for the audience; adults and children alike will have to use their imagination; to believe in the show. But that’s exactly how it should be in the theatre.”

And while the Peter Pan show will be indoors in the grandoise surroundings of Ayr Town Hall, supersleuth Sherlock will get the full open- air treatment at Culzean.

Hound Of The Baskervilles director Bryony Tebbutt said she can’t wait to bring the daring detective to a South Ayrshire stage.

She said: “I’m a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, and am thrilled to be staging probably the most well- known of all Conan Doyle’s collection.

“I want to bring back the excitement and thrill of the mystery, with an air of classic Sherlock.”

And writer Laura Turner, who adapted the 114- year- old story for its latest stage production, is just as excited about the show.

She said: “Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles is a wonderfully dramatic chase across the dark and dangerous landscape of Dartmoor.

“With a new spin on the classic Holmesian story of intrigue, murder and revenge, I hope our adaptation of the Hound of the Baskervilles will thrill new audiences and fans alike.

“A mysterious creature haunts the moors, but what’s more dangerous - man or beast?”
