Bellfield Tavern will rock for wee Tilly

- Fraser Wilson

One of Kilmarnock’s leading music venues is getting ready to rock in support of a special charity event.

The Bellfield Tavern will host a night of live music on August 13 with all proceeds from the event going to support Tilly Sharkey.

Last week the Ayrshire Post, revealed how the five- year- old was given just a year to live by doctors, who diagnosed her with an aggressive form of cancer.

So far the illness has proved incurable, however, a groundbreaking new procedure in America could save Tilly’s life – now her family face a desperate race against time to raise £ 45,000 to send her there for treatment.

And the owners of the Bellfield Tavern want to help, putting on ‘ Kilmarnock Rocks for Tilly’ – a four band showcase.

Amanda Robinson, who runs the bar with partner Bill Gilchrist, said: “After reading the story, someone asked us if there was something we could do.

“I thought we knew enough people that we could definitely do more than donate a bottle to a raffle or something, so we have decided to put on the gig.”

Tickets will be £ 5 on the night, with the 150 venue hosting ‘ The Stumblers’, ‘ Mod Life Crisis’, and ‘ The Mighty Walters Special’. A fourth band has been lined up, but is yet to confirm.

As well as fantastic music, there will be an hour set aside for a raffle, with all proceeds from that also going to the charity.

Amanda said all the bands were “fantastic,” but admitted she was delighted to have Glasgow’s ‘ Mod Life Crisis’ playing, saying she can’t wait for their mod music and 60s covers.

“We would love to make around £ 1500 on the night,” Amanda added. “It’s not much, but if everyone does their bit, then hopefully the family will reach their target soon.”

Tilly has contracted diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma ( DIPG), which infiltrates the brain stem. It has a zero per cent survival rate.

However, mum Michelle has been contacted by a doctor in America who wants to see Tilly’s medical records with a view to trying something – “we’re not giving up hope,” she said.

The bubbly schoolkid will start a programme of radiotherapy in a fortnight, with thousands rallying to offer wee Tilly their support.
