Rowers set to take on the world
Rowers from Girvan are off to the World Rowing Championships, boosted by a top coaching session.
Girvan Coastal Rowing Club got tips from Ian Clark of Royal West Amateur Boat Club.
Ten Girvan rowers revised rowing techniques in a shore- based workshop in Girvan’s Town House before taking to the water for practical application in the skiff.
With Ian Clark coaching from the bow and Ian McClymont coxing, rowers focused on their rowing technique.
The Stroke Cycle involves the Catch, the Drive, the Finish and the Recovery.
In rowing as part of a team, timing is all- important, so crews were reminded to listen carefully for one synchronised splash, as all oars enter the water at the same moment.
This event was part- funded by Carrick Futures and SAC Development Fund.
The newly adapted oars ( varnished and painted by Bill S) were pronounced a great success – smooth handles, well- balanced and allowing us to sit offset for the best rowing position.
The training day focussed improving technique, most important for the Girvan team set to compete in Skiffieworlds, the World Rowing Championship for the St Ayles Class.
Members will be rowing at Strangford Lough, County Down, from July 24.
