Tarbolton facing final end

- Stephen Houston

A village bowling club is heading into the ditch after 142 years.

Like other greens, Tarbolton has been suffering drops in membership for years.

And there is simply not enough cash to keep going.

One last throw of the dice at saving the historic green is being made.

And extraordinary AGM is being staged on November 13.

Treasurer Julie Lindsay said: “We owe it to our forefathers not to give up,

“I don’t think we would even rule out going round with a flat cap.”

The committee appear determined to search all avenues to ensure it was not the last.

The club was founded in 1874 and has been at the heart of the community since then.

Recently it is club functions like birthday parties that have helped bring in some revenue.

The club’s Facebook site relayed the shocking financial position and has got support from around the world.

A posting says: “It is with great sadness and tears blinding me that I write this.

“Due to the financial position of the club, we have had no option but to call an extraordinary AGM to discuss its permanent closure.

“This will take place on Sunday, November 13, at 11am in the main hall of club.

“All members, past and present and non members and the community are urged to attend.

“We will endeavour to honour bookings already actioned.

“If there are any big lottery winners out there or anyone willing to make a substantial financial contribution to help turn things around, please do.”

Julie Lindsay said they would not “go down without a fight.”
