Alan thanked the guild for considering his request, and for any help that might be forthcoming. Susan Webb from the Little Art School Trust then spoke about their work with dementia patients, introducing them to drawing and painting. This is a new charity set up in 2015 and supported by NHS Ayrshire and Arran and South Ayrshire Council. Susan was thanked by Elaine Grant on behalf of the guild. The next meeting is on October 31 when Stephanie As part McLaughlin will talk about Nicaragua. All will be made welcome. Burns Club The speaker at last week’s Burns Club Meeting was Willie Dick on the topic Carnell Estates and Burns. He began by outlining the early history of Carnell from its earliest days when it was in the hands of the Wallaces of Craigie, who incidentally also acquired Dundonald Castle from the Stewart kings. Having worked on the Estate for a number of years Willie was well qualified to bring that history right up to modern times when the House features as an upmarket residence available as a place to take a short break. The Burns connections with Carnell were also outlined, including the poet’s wooing of Elison Begbie who was a servant in Carnell. Willie kept the talk light by interspersing the factual matters with excerpts of poetry by Burns and others, and with some humorous stories. The reader for the evening was Des Rowe who, in the past, has delivered some of the monologues made famous by Stanley Holloway. This time Des chose to explain some of the background to these humorous tales, pointing out some interesting connections with other writers. He concluded with a rendition of the monologue The Magna Charter. Members should note that tickets are now available for the St Andrew’s Night to be held on Friday, November 25, in the bowling club, priced £ 20 a ticket. The next club night will be on Wednesday, November 23, when Andrew Dick will speak on The Covenanters. Club meetings are held in the bowling club at 7.30pm and gentleman visitors are welcome.
