Perfect comic timing

- Michael Reynolds

The Scottish premiere of a new amateur operatic performance comes to The Gaiety this week.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which is presented by members of the Ayrshire Philharmonic Operatic Society ( APOS) the show runs from Tuesday, November 8 until Saturday, November 12.

The production is based on the 1988 film, starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin.

The pair are con men who battle it out on the French Riviera for the affections of American soap queen Christine Colgate, amongst other wealthy women who succumb to their charms.

The comedy features a jazzy score by David Yazbek - who wrote music for The Full Monty - which was nominated for 11 Tony Awards.

The Philharmonic Society was founded in 1933 in Ayr and initially specialised in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas before branching out into a host of different works. They have produced more than 80 performances, including last year’s White Christmas spectacular.

APOS president Sharon McDonald, who stars as Christine Colgate, said: “The company have been rehearsing non- stop. With so many fantastic numbers, it’s a jam packed show with plenty singing, dancing and comedy. It’s one not to be missed so get your tickets fast.” Graeme Strawhorne added: “Being involved in the Company is great fun and allows you to meet great people and perform the music that you love.

“I cannot recommend life with the Philharmonic Society enough to anyone who wants to join us and tread the boards.” Tickets for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre cost £ 19/£ 17 concessions and are available from www. ayrgaiety. co. uk or on 01292 288235.
