Actor Freddie Boardley never did dull moments

-

The deaths of a flurry of showbiz names sullied the end of 2016... but none more than the passing of Freddie Boardley, aged just 66.

With roles in TV serials like Bad Boys and Brookside – and even a fleeting spot on Coronation Street – Freddie fitted the genre of character actor.

But for those of us in Ayr who knew him – and drank with him – the ‘ character’ always took centre stage. Freddie never did dull moments.

Back in the day, I’d occasionally bump into the Three Amigos – Freddie, DJ Tom Jones and doeeyed Rabbie lookalike, Gordon Taylor. Oozing chat, confidence and charm, they cut a swathe through the ladies of the day... with many becoming the ladies of the next day as well!

Sadly, Jonesy is the last man standing.

Years ago, just after my own book came out, Freddie asked if I could advise him on his own autobiography.

Over more drinks than I can remember, Freddie outlined his ideas for a blockbuster that would take readers on a journey inside the Army, between the lines, behind the scenes... and under the bed sheets.

I did my best to explain the legalities of such a book. Most of the people he planned to name were still alive – and therefore had “professional reputations” to protect.

His book would have been a legal nightmare... but it would have flown off the shelves!

He said he’d get something on paper and let me see it. He never did.

I think the last time I met him, he was scurrying down Clarence Drive in Glasgow’s West End.

“Ah’v got a great story for you, man” he said breathlessly. “What is it Freddie?”. He kept staring at his watch. “No time. I’ve got to get home and phone my mother...” And off he went.

And I guess that was Freddie. Life at a hundred miles an hour, many of them fuelled by vodka... but making time for those he really cared about. His funeral is at Ayr Crematorium at noon on Saturday.
