Elvis club plan Prestwick gig

- Michael Reynolds

A Scottish branch of the official Elvis Presley Fan Club will host a special event to commemorate 40 years since The King died.

The Elvis Touch, the Glasgow branch of the Elvis fan club, have held their annual birthday bash at Prestwick Airport - the only place in the UK where the legendary performer set foot - for the last 22 years.

The events have proved incredibly popular, with around 200 Elvis fans meeting at the event.

Several special events are planned throughout the year to honour Elvis’ legacy, with many of the members heading to Memphis in August to join in celebrations 40 years to the day since he died at home in Graceland.

After a career spanning more than two decades, including countless number one singles and albums as well as a host of popular film appearances, he died at the age of 42 in August 1977.

He landed at Prestwick Airport on March 3, 1960, when a United States Army plane stopped to refuel, en route from Germany, as dozens of screaming fans awaited.

The Elvis Touch event takes place at Prestwick Airport’s Aviator Suite on Saturday, January 14 with music from The Tennessee Hotshots. Doors are at 8pm. Tickets cost £ 10 and are available from Paul on 01294 272652 or from www. facebook. com/ TheElvisTouchGlasgow.
