Swim team proving a pool of talent

- Gary Craig

South Ayrshire Swim Team’s talented Para squad had another incredible year in 2016.

The talented squad of swimmers hit some amazing heights in competition while having great fun in training.

Fiona Dawson was a member of the Great Britain team who travelled to Florence, Italy, to compete in the Downs Syndrome World Championships.

Fiona was successful in winning an international bronze medal but also gained an incredible two new world records in the M2 category.

Kayleigh Haggo was voted winner of the West Sound Cream of Ayrshire Up and Coming Youngster Award and topped off a brilliant year by winning four gold medals at the British Para competition in Manchester in December.

Laura Logan and Cerys McCrindle finished the year on a high by being selected to join the Great Britain Downs Syndrome Squad in early 2017. Laura, Cerys and Fiona will also represent Scotland West in the 2017 Special Olympics.

Jack Dickson swam out of his skin in the Scottish Senior Championships at Tollcross in May to win a silver medal.

Jack, Calum Munro, Darren Morrison and Frances Smillie were part of the SAST team that took part in the Kilmarnock Jets Gala in October when the team all left with a clutch of medals, many of them gold.

Two big highlights of the day for SAST were the three boys finishing first, second and third in the same event for a clean sweep of medals and also Kayleigh breaking her own Scottish record for 100m breast stroke.

A spokesman said: “We all look forward to Duncan, Ellie, Ryan and Cameron competing with us in 2017 for what should be an exciting year.

“The squad say a special thanks to Justin Gill and everyone at Hillhouse Quarry Group for providing tops and shorts for the team to wear at future competitions.”
