Fireraising worries discussed in Prestwick

-

Prestwick South Community Council Update ( January):

Police Report: The community police representatives highlighted a particular problem of recent incidents where youths had been lighting fires at various locations within the town including the Oval.

The setting fire to the ivy at the old St Nicholas Church in Kirk Street was another example of the problem.

They also commented on traffic congestion in the Main Street caused by vehicles being badly parked.

In reply to a question about vehicles being parked on the footpath the current legal situation was explained by Sergeant Barclay.

Several members expressed their concern in respect of failure to take action as pedestrians and, in particular, people with prams or wheelchairs, had frequently to go onto the road to get past.

Future of the Scottish Planning System: Cchairman Meic Evans commented on this recently published paper from the Scottish Government.

He made reference to the proposals which could give a more significant role to community councils in the planning process.

South Ayrshire Council Report: SAC Cllr Ian Cochrane commented on the consultation process in connection with their planning main issues report.

He referred in particular to the interactive map on local planning which can be found on the council’s website.

He also noted the there had been differences of opinion expressed on the proposals for new housing on the site of the former police and social work buildings.

The main issues appear to be the importance of conserving these red sandstone buildings or the provision of new housing for the elderly at a location convenient for shopping, transport and medical services.

Prestwick Airport: Cllr Jim Riach reported on the most recent of the airport consultative committee.

He made particular reference to the significance of the Spaceport project which, contrary to some press reports which suggested that this was “pie in the sky,” was being progressed actively by experts and companies who can see a way ahead for a major input to the local economy.

The next meeting will be held in Kingcase Church Hall at 7pm on Thursday, February 23.

All welcome.
