Language skills vital to careers

Languages for Business Thirty- six S3 pupils attended the Languages for Business event at St Joseph’s Academy last Tuesday. The event is held in partnershi­p with Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and pupils hear from a wide range of business leaders who view languages as a key skill. Pupils also got the chance to speak to business representa­tives and discover more about the range of careers and employment opportunit­ies available. Supported study The school supported study programme started for S4, S5 and S6 pupils last week. It will run each Wednesday and Thursday from 2.55- 3.55pm. Supported study lets pupils receive additional support from their teachers after school in the classroom setting. Pupils can use this time to complete homework, receive extra help in areas of the curriculum that they find challengin­g, complete folio work or consolidat­e their understand­ing. Transport is provided to get pupils home after supported study. Subject choices All S1 to S5 pupils will be meeting with their guidance teacher over the next few weeks to choose their subjects for next session. Schools will Rock You Last weekend the cast of the show ‘ Schools will Rock You’ took part in a rehearsal weekend. After a Friday night watching a video of the show they spent Saturday playing team- building games and learning a full dance routine. SportAuchi­nleck Academy won the East Ayrshire heptathlon championsh­ip on Thursday at the Triple A in Kilmarnock. Fourteen boys and girls from S1 and S2 competed in seven sprinting, jumping, throwing and endurance events against all other East Ayrshire secondary schools. There were no stand- out performers as every one of the pupils performed well. Ross Rollie, Euan McLatchie, William Prince, Logan Murray, Caleb Robertson, Craig Fletcher, Lewis Young, Amy Wallace, Samm Robertson, Lauryn Hanlon, Abi Davidson, Iona Young, Katie Wallace and Kate Drummond made it through to the regional finals next month.
