Circus celebrates 21 years of nightmares

- Kenny Smith

Two nights of thrills and blood spills are coming to Ayrshire.

The Circus of Horrors celebrates its 21st anniversary as it comes to Ayr and Kilmarnock in its latest incarnation, The Never- Ending Nightmare.

It will terrify at the Palace Theatre on Sunday, February 12, while screams will be in store at the Gaiety Theatre on Tuesday, April 18.

The spectacular features an amazing amalgamation of bizarre, brave and beautiful acts all woven into an Alice in Horrorland- type story, driven by a mainly original soundscape and performed with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek!

The Circus of Horrors started its gruesome beginnings at the 1995 Glastonbury Festival and became an instant hit, touring all over the world from Chile to Chatham, Argentina to Aberdeen, Japan to Jersey including festival appearances with Alice Cooper, Eminem, Motley Crue, Oasis, Iron Maiden, the Manic St Preachers, Foo Fighters and many more.

The Circus of horrors features a creepy cast, including Dr Haze, the undead ringmaster and the creator of the Circus of horrors; ex- tax inspector Hannibal Hellmuerto, who is now a Guinness world record holding sword swallower; his wife Anastasia IV, a hair hanging beauty - a female haircules beauty who performs a real act suspended only by her golden locks; and Rellik the killer clown, who overcame his coulrophobia ( fear of clowns) to get a job in the show.

Annually, the Circus of Horrors plays over 100 UK theatres and this tour has expanded to take in festivals throughout the world including The Fuji Rock Festival in Japan ( twice), the Wacken Festival in Germany plus shows in Chile, Uruguay, Holland, Belgium, Argentina, France, Italy, Ireland, Finland, Hong Kong and Moscow where it became the first UK circus ever to perform in Russia. The show also played 10 nights at London’s O2.

This is not the first time that The Circus of Horrors has created history as it became the only circus ever to reach the finals of Britain’s Got Talent and the first circus to perform in London’s West End for over 100 years.

The appearance on Britain’s Got Talent prompted Simon Cowell to comment: “I loved it.”

It has other celebrity fans, including chat show host Graham Norton, who said: “You have to go and see this if, one day something will go wrong and you will be able to say I was there,” while Ant and Dec said: “That was incredible.”

The Circus Of Horrors’ appearances on various subsequent TV shows have turned what started as a cult show into a household name – taking the extreme to the mainstream.

TV credits now also boast The X Factor, The Slammer, Daybreak, Fairground Attractions, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Body Shockers, Fake Reaction, This Morning, Ant & Dec, The One Show and A Royal Command Performance.

Currently, the Palace and Gaiety are running a two for one offer for the show.
