‘ Dishonest’ carer’s misconduct axe Richard Dunlop banned from working in homes

- Stephen Houston

A rogue carer at an old folks home has been branded devious and kicked out of the sector.

Former colleagues lined up to give evidence against Richard Dunlop.

He worked at Airlie House in Ayr’s Victoria Park, owned by Ayr Baptist Church.

But it emerged the 48- year- old was a liar who made up accusations about his colleagues and was “dishonest” in looking after the old folk.

And this week a former workmate - known as “VV” - who gave evidence against him said: “Nobody at Ayr Baptist Church took our complaints seriously about Dunlop.

“He was in fact a risk to his colleagues and to the old people we were meant to be looking after.

“I am delighted he will never work in the care sector again. He was devious and thought he could get away with it.”

Dunlop failed to appear for the conduct hearing by the Scottish Social Services Council in Dundee last week.

He faced a total of 21 accusations within the 26- resident home between June 2014 and February last year.

The SSSC has now removed his registration on the grounds of misconduct.

He started employment at Airlie House in September 2011 and quit when the allegations surfaced in 2016.

The hearing ruled misconduct included “several instances of dishonesty with involved service users and colleagues.”

He “abused the trust” of workmates, residents and his employers and “concealed wrong doing” in care notes.

And the finding pointed out: “The misconduct found raised significant risks of physical, emotional or potential financial harm to service users and colleagues.

“You failed to cooperate with and engage in the council’s investigation.”

The council said a warning or suspension would not protect the public.

It added: “A removal order was the appropriate sanction. The misconduct found was fundamentally incompatible with being a social service worker” and that Dunlop had “deep- seated attitudinal or personality issues.”

Airlie House refused to comment on the outcome.
