Phoenix double headliners offer eclectic mix of genres

-

Ayr Phoenix Folk Club has announced the details of its next club night.

On Tuesday, March 7, there will be a double bill of headline acts, with Legacy and Sean & Robyn Gray.

Pat Lappin and Jim Scullion, the club organisers, said: “If you are in town or within travel- distance please try and get along to support and establish our new folk club venture and/ or spread the news.

“Legacy were formed around 2002, it’s mission being to bring people together through music, breaking down barriers and forging new friendships.

“The core of the band are Steve McCann and Paul Creighton. Both are multi- instrumentalists, their sets normally feature guitar, bass, mandolin, and banjo.

“Steve’s background lies mainly in rock whereas Paul hails from traditional folk. Together they add a third element – harmony. Years of playing together have seen them develop an eclectic mix and they move comfortably between different genres – folk, blues, country, bluegrass, ceilidh, contemporary.

“Paul is an awardwinning songwriter who specialises in heartwrenching ballads and joiny- in chorus songs.

“Legacy is known as an ‘ elastic band’ as they are often joined by other musicians. If you enjoy an evening where you enjoy tapping your feet, singing along, dancing and even searching for the tissues then Legacy is for you! Sean and Robyn Gray are brother and sister from Coylton. Both siblings studied at the prestigious National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music and since then have continued to play in and be part of musical projects around the world as well as performing together.

“Sean has toured extensively with The Paul McKenna Band and has released four albums to high critical acclaim. He was also commissioned to write and perform a piece at Celtic Connections. His first solo recording, Waiting Room EP, is out now.

“Robyn founded and performed throughout Europe with Dr Mango and the Chickpeas as well as with ‘ folk- noir balladeer’ Rachel Sermanni.”

The night will take place at Ayr Ex- Services Club on Academy Street, at 7.15 for 8pm. Tickets cost £ 9 ( call 01292 263537 or email info@ ayrphoenix. co. uk for details).
