Guns are out for Glenafton

McEwan: Treble- winners now a big scalp

- Mike Wilson

Craig McEwan says everyone will be gunning for his Treble winners when the Junior football season kicks off on Wednesday night.

No one expects Glenafton to repeat last season’s wonderful heroics – but don’t tell that to the Loch Park boss.

McEwan, who led Glens to the Scottish Cup, Premier title and League Champions Trophy refuses to set his sights any lower.

McEwan rapped: “I want us to be like Auchinleck Talbot and be up there challenging for trophies every season.

“It’s a tough goal but trying to replicate what we did last season is definitely on my wish list.

“It would be remiss to aim for anything less.

“Premier League safety is always the first priority but a club like Glens should be up there competing at the other end.

“We were fortunate to have an unbelievable season and now we will have a big target on our backs that other clubs will be aiming for.

“Everyone will want to beat us which means that this season will be even harder than the last one.”

Bizarrely, Glens kick off with a run of three straight away ties in the Ardagh Cup.

They are due at Auchinleck on Wednesday night, visit Muirkirk on Saturday and then head to Cumnock next Wednesday.

McEwan admitted: “I don’t know why our first three games are away but it doesn’t bother me.

“There is nothing untoward – that’s just the way it is. We are going to two of the three best surfaces in the league so that will suit us.”

McEwan has strengthened his squad by bringing back two former Glens players in Jamie McKernon and Dale Moore.

McKernon has returned from Queen’s Park with a niggling injury while Moore has moved from Troon.

McEwan said: “We have added quality and that excites me. Both know the set- up very well and will be good acquisitions.”

Glens lost 5- 3 away to Linlithgow in their final friendly.
