Scottish Airshow soars to heights

More than 100,000 enthusiasts pour into the Ayr area

The Scottish Airshow has soared to new heights as organisers hailed their “phenomenal event”.

More than 100,000 punters poured into Ayr and surrounding towns at the weekend to witness thrilling aerobatics displays, headlined by the Red Arrows.

The Low Green was the centrepiece of the action as thousands of visitors joined locals to enjoy two action- packed days.

And not even a wet Sunday could deter huge crowds from turning out to enjoy the climax of the event with a stunning display by the Arrows.

Event chief Doug Maclean said: “We were not without our challenges, and Sunday’s weather proved a particular hurdle to overcome.

“On the same day, Bournemouth had to cancel their entire show, while the Red Arrows were forced to cancel their display just over the water at Portrush.

“So we were extremely blessed to have them display for us – and we reckon up to 150,000 people enjoyed the weekend overall.”

While the pilots pulled off acrobatics in the sky, the tills of town traders were also leaping with joy.

Bars and restaurants reported booming business, with the likes of the Chestnuts, Glen Park Hotel and Smiths all basking in the afterburners.

And organisers are already planning an even BIGGER show for 2018.

Doug revealed: “The plan is for a three- day event with the return of our popular fireworks display for the Friday night.

“Added to the Saturday and Sunday – and with good weather thrown in – there is the potential to draw nearly 250,000 people.

“We are now comfortably established as Scotland’s biggest family event and we look forward to our future here in South Ayrshire.”

Post photographers Euan McCall, Iain Brown and Alister Firth were all out enjoying the best of the weekend action.
