Chippy among Britain’s best

- Lochlin Highet

A fish and chip shop is officially one of the top two chippies in Scotland.

The Forehill Cafe will fight against Cromars in St Andrews for the crown of top of the food chain in Scotland, with the winner being announced in January.

The Ayr chippy is also in the top 20 fish and chip shops in the UK.

Owner Stephen Conetta, 62, decided to enter both the Scottish and UK contests and he is delighted with how well the competition is going.

He said: “It is a great honour being named amongst the best in the UK.

“Winning best in Scotland would be a tremendous achievement and I don’t see why we can’t do it after coming this far.

“I think best in the UK would be a bit far off but why not dream?

“This competition is great as I think it creates a healthy, competitive battle with other shops as they all want to try and better us.

“We are losing a lot of sales from other fast food joints so this sort of thing is great as it gets us some much needed publicity.

“It also means customers are getting a great variety of quality food.”

Stephen has invested heavily in his shop by installing a new frying station which cost £ 50,000.

The fish is bought fresh daily from the fish market in Peterhead and Stephen has a big focus on biodegradable boxes.

He runs the shop with wife Carolina and another 10 staff.

He sells sea bass, haddock, long fish and a bigger angel cut haddock.

Along with this he sells 25 flavours of ice cream including favourites such as vanilla, raspberry ripple and Turkish delight.
