Crock On

In politics, a week is a long time.

But in football, it may as well be an eternity.

Over at Somerset Park, Barcelona have morphed into Barnet.

And now, on the eve of our first league crunch, we’ve gone and lost half a team. It’s tough at the top. And thankfully Ian McCall is a man who’s been there and done it during a lengthy career in the game.

But he’ll need all his guile to navigate this current rocky course.

Irony can be a cruel thing and if there was one negative of our outstanding start, it suddenly raised expectations to the point of craziness.

I stood pontificating the matter with United superfan Duncan McLean at the excellent Scottish Airshow.

And as we gazed skywards, big ‘ Eagle’ made quite the point.

Had we been offered this kind of start, with a victory against K* llie thrown in, we’d all have jumped at the chance. So now we must call for some reality. The trip to Kirkcaldy on Saturday will be a serious examination of our stretched ranks.

They are scoring goals for fun and have scorched to the position of title favourites.

It’s a chance for us to go there and make a statement.

Whatever the outcome, nothing is won or lost in the first week of September.

But keeping our heads – while plenty others around us may be losing theirs — will prove the most important thing over the course of the campaign.

See you at Starks.

Cricketing Gods

Running out of superlatives for the boys at the Henry Thow Oval.

Prestwick’s cricket kings have set the benchmark this season with their record breaking haul.

And victory in the league grand final against Heriot’s on Saturday was real icing on the cake stuff.

Honorary president Tommy Halpin is hailing this as the best ever achievement in the club’s history.

Incredible chat from a man of his stature — and we must sit up and take note.

It’s been a year to remember. Enjoy a well deserved winter holiday, chaps.
