‘ End our parking chaos’

- Stuart Wilson

Quiet streets have been turned into a parking jungle for Ayr’s overflowing university, it has been claimed.

Fe d - u p C r a i g i e residents say motors using the nearby UWS campus are being dumped on their doorstep.

Residential spots such as James Campbell Road and Craigie Way have now become “no- go zones,” according to community leaders.

It comes as more than 1000 students launched their own petition against uni chiefs to get the parking problem sorted.

Only two of the university’s four car park parks are available to its 3000 students – the other two being for staff.

And both residents and students insist that is nowhere near enough for the sprawling education hub.

Craigie councillor, Ian Cavana, lives just a stone’s throw from the campus.

He said: “This is a long running problem that is only getting worse.

“On some days the parked cars stretch for as far as the eye can see up Craigie Way and the majority belong to students.

“It is not their fault as such – clearly not enough space exists within the university itself.”

Fellow Ayr Nor th councillor, Ian Davis, added: “Evidently there is no overnight fix here.

“But I am struck by similar university examples, such as Dundee, who manage to operate very effectively with a far smaller car park.

“Perhaps the issue is more to do with students becoming reliant on cars as their mode of transport.”

A spokesman for the university said: “UWS has two dedicated car parks at Ayr Campus for students to access on a first- come, firstserved basis.

“To help minimise pressures on car parking in and around the campus we actively encourage and support our students to make sustainable travel choices for their journeys to and from Ayr Campus, regularly promoting public transport options to them and advising on our cycle to work and car share schemes as travel options for our students.”
