Well tonne in big clean- up

-

Almost 500 TONNES of rubble have been dredged from Prestwick beach as work gets under way to clear the sand.

Council teams have been sent into action following months of campaigning to clear the site of bricks and mortar.

And we can reveal the huge haul has already been lifted as part of the clean- up exercise.

Jim Ronney, chair of Prestwick North Community Council, said: “If ever we needed the proof that this work needed done, this is it. Shifting 500 tonnes of rubbish like that will make the world of difference – and there’s still a lot more to come. The important thing is that we don’t stop here. We have to keep pushing on and stay on top of the problem now that we have some real momentum.”

Council bosses have activated a Trommel sieve machine, used during a trial period earlier this year.

The machinery has been sent to work between the town’s Burgh Road and the former outdoor swimming pool.
