Runner Sam helps Hansel
Kind- hearted Sam Whitters from Ayr recently took part in her first ever half marathon raising vital funds for Hansel.
And it was a dream come true for Sam as she only took up running again 18 months ago having lost a staggering four stone in weight.
At 13 miles the half marathon is effectively two 10k races.
Sam said: “I used to run before I had my children, who are now ten and seven and I was keen to try and lose weight so I thought I; d try it again. It took me a while but I slowly started to enjoy it. I had taken part in a few 10ks and never thought I would be able to manage a half marathon. But then I thought why not. I needed something to aim for and the next minute I’d entered the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Half Marathon.
“I really enjoyed it and the support was fantastic. It was hard going but I just kept thinking of Hansel and all their good work and that was enough motivation to get me across the finishing line.”
Sam visited Hansel to learn first- hand of their work in the community with customers living with a learning disability and their families.
She presented a cheque for £ 417.50 to Fundraising Assistant, Debbie Campbell which will go towards Shawburn House which provides residential support to customers in Prestwick.
Debbie, left, said: “Sam really is a star and what’s she’s achieved is fantastic and an inspiration to us all. I don’t think there will be anything stopping her now.”
