Design puts tower on map
Pilgrim stamp by Ada
An historic Ayr landmark will star in a 145- mile pilgrimage tourist trail.
Sightseers following an ancient route from Glasgow Cathedral to St Ninian’s Cave at Whithorn will be signposted to the town’s St John’s Tower.
They will join the likes of famous visitors Robert the Bruce, James IV and Mary Queen of Scots who made trips to the tower. School girl Ada Lysiak, 12, designed an image for the rubber stamp featuring the iconic tower.
Tourists will collect a pilgrim stamp when they visit the remnants of the town’s medieval parish church from the 12th century. The St John’s primary pupil took part in a competition along with other kids to come up with ideas for the stamp.
Friends of St John’s Tower ( FrOST) members Yolanda McCall and Judith Paterson chose Adriana as the winner.
Yolanda said: “Ada’s design of St. John’s Tower was confident, clear and bold. It will serve as a great reminder to walkers of their visit to Ayr.” She added: “The children came up with some wonderful ideas for the design of the rubber stamp. Most pictures featured St. John’s Tower, but some offered the view of Arran and the coast.”
St John’s head Louise Gray said: “The children in the Art Elective Class were given the opportunity to take part in a real design challenge. They visited St John’s Tower and were given guided tours by members of the Friends of St John’s Tower ( FrOST). The children learned about the history of the tower er and its significance for the Whithorn Way. It has been a fun and educational experience for them all.”
Ada’s winning image is to be sent to a graphic designer for conversion into rubber stamps. The stamps will be held at t Renaldo’s and the tourist t information office in Ayr. r.
