Katie leads the best in the west

Fifteen South Ayrshire Swim Team members won 19 medals and recorded 21 PBs from 50 swims at the West District Senior Age Group Championsh­ips.

Sixteen- year- old Katie Robertson won the 16 years and over 100 Free, 100 Backstroke, 400 IM and 400 Freestyle. Here best performanc­e came in the 400 Free were she took just over 13 seconds off her previous best.

In the same age group, 17- year- old girls captain Caitlin Duffy was runnerup in the 400 and 100 Freestyle.

Beth Gordon was runner- up in the 100 Butterfly and had a PB in the 800 free where she was third.

Seventeen- year- old boys’ team captain David Rowan was third in the 200 Breaststro­ke and fourth in 100. In the girls’ Breaststro­ke, Lorna Thompson finished fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 100.

Oscar Smillie showed his versatilit­y with silvers in the 15 years 200 IM and 200 Freestyle while also securing third spot in the 100 Breaststro­ke. The Breast and IM were lifetime bests.

Hannah Young, 15, finished second in the 400 free and fifth in the 100.

Sophie Cameron was a well- earned third in the 15 years 200 backstroke and was fourth in the 100 Back and 400 Free.

In the 14 years group, Victoria McCormick made the podium four times with second in the 200 Backstroke and IM and bronze for the 100 Backstroke and 400 Freestyle. Both the IM and 400 were impressive PBs for this time of the season.

Fast improving Ross Erentz took bronze in the 14 years 200 Breaststro­ke with 10 second improvemen­t. Lewis Hammond’s impressive personal best times placed him just out of the medals with fourth in the 14 years 100 fly and 200 back.

John Houston in the 16 & over 200IM and Matthew Gordon in the 14 years 200 backstroke both finished sixth with PBs. More lifetime bests came from Fraser Collier, 16, with four seconds off in the 400IM and 14- year- old Criag steel with a second improvemen­t in the 200 backstroke.

All the swimmers returned from a week’s training camp in Fuertevent­ura four days prior. The heavy scheduled days included morning swim training, land training, gym strength sessions, an evening swim session and plenty of team activities.

The 24 swimmers worked hard on the camp which will contribute hugely to building a solid foundation for the rest of the 2017- 2018 season.
