Floody hell for streets of Troon

Heavy rainfall overwhelms drains and causes chaos

- Sarah Hilley

Troon town centre has been hit by flooding with water seeping up to doorfronts.

But one daredevil mobility scooter rider refused to let the floods halt his town centre journey.

He bravely tore through deep water swamping Jubilee Road on Tuesday morning unlike many car drivers who turned back.

The pavement was underwater so the adventurous stuntman took a diversion down the middle of the road instead while vehicles floundered.

Wearing a tweed hat and bright yellow coat he glided along unruffled by the freak flooding. Parts of the town centre near Morrison’s were underwater with busy Portland Street submerged as well as a section of Church Street.

Blocked drains due to heavy rainfall were blamed. Calls were made for sandbags to be distributed to save shops and homes from damage.

The water seeped up to a number of doorways.

Councillor Philip Saxton said: “I urge people to be cautious. Troon Community Council are trying to organise sandbags. This is a rare occurrence.”

Lauren CJ Wyllie, of Portland Street, said the water had entered her home.

Speaking on social media, she said: “It’s come right in my front door. I’ve got personal belongings here that I don’t want getting ruined.”

A passerby said: “There were no flood signs anywhere. Cars were turning away but some drove through the water including the man in the mobility scooter.”

Stewart Turner head of Ayrshire Roads Alliance said: “The recent very heavy rain and stormy weather has resulted in some localised flooding in Troon and we have operatives attending to resolve this.

“We are keeping a continuous eye on the forecast to make sure we are in the best possible place to respond to any adverse conditions that may arise from inclement weather.”

A number of people called SEPA, the Ayrshire Roads Alliance and Scottish Water for advice.

Residents also said Tuesday’s high tide had caused the water deluge.
