Marr up for the fight
Marr Rugby took their place at Scottish rugby’s top table for the first time ever – and showed from the first kick they wouldn’t be overawed.
A 41- 28 defeat by Glasgow Hawks was followed a week later by their first win – they beat Heriot’s 22- 22 at Fullarton.
Marr were flying in week three when they went to Hawick and came back with a 23- 19 win.
The Troon boys had well and truly arrived in the top flight.
Week four saw Marr flex their muscles again with a fighting 13- 13 draw at home to Watsonian.
There was agony on the final day of September when Marr were edged out 34- 32 away to Boroughmuir.
The eagerly awaited Ayrshire derby arrived on October 7 when Ayr took the honours with a 19- 6 win at Fullarton.
Marr got a lesson the following week when they crashed 66- 10 away to leaders Melrose.
The going got tough when they lost 24- 12 at home to Currie followed by a 40- 29 defeat at Stirling County.
But they bounced back to beat Glasgow Hawks 31- 15 before losing to Heriot’s and Hawick.
It’s been an up and down start for last season’s champions Ayr.
An opening day 30- 28 win at Boroughmuir was followed by defeats to Glasgow Hawks ( 18- 28) and Melrose ( 17- 34).
Wins followed against Currie ( 24- 15), Stirling County ( 46- 33), Marr ( 19- 6), Heriot’s ( 41- 17) and Hawick ( 32- 19) defeat.
Then the wheels fell off. A crushing 48- 12 defeat at home to Watsonian, the heaviest loss at Millbrae for many a day.
Second place was back on after wins over Boroughmuir ( 28- 15) and Hawks ( 44- 31). But Ayr have it all still to do.
