Grenade scare for golf club workers

- Stephen Houston

A top golf course had to be sealed off while a GRENADE was blown up.

Greenkeepers nearly dug the wartime explosive up as they cut turf.

When they realised what they had found, they evacuated the area and called in police.

Army ordnance experts then raced from Edinburgh and golfers anxious to play their rounds were warned to steer clear.

A controlled explosion was so loud it startled dogs a mile away.

The drama happened pp in Troon as Royal Troon roon greenkeeping staff taff were working on the Portland Course.

They made their r shock discovery on the practice e area between the first and second holes.

And one source rce said: “They were very

lucky. But I suppose at least there were plenty of bunkers to take cover nearby.”

The drama happened on Friday, December 22 and the explosion was heard around 2pm.

The Royal Logistics Corp Bomb Disposal unit had driven onto the first fairway, sparking fear in the town.

Royal Troon Secretary Stephen Anthony revealed the area was sealed off.

He said: “A member of the greenkeeping staff came across an old World War I grenade.

“This would have been there undisturbed since the time of the course being used during the war.

“Like many courses along the coast, they were used for military training.

“The discovery was made on the Portland practice area between the first and the second holes.

“The course manager called the police who then called the bomb squad.

“A controlled explosion was later carried out.”

When asked if there was a crater left, Mr Anthony said: “No, nothing of a major nature.”
