25 YEARS AGO

A well- known Ayr public house may soon be calling for “last orders.”

For it is believed theMarket Inn will be demolished by its new owners, supermarke­t giant Safeway. The supermarke­t was meeting the current licensees - brothers William and Stan Morris. And on the eve of the meeting William admitted: “It is a worrying and uncertain time for us.”

The existing lease with Kyle and Carrick District Council has more than 20 years still to run. The area was formerly in the ownership of Ayr Common Good.

50 YEARS AGO

Labourer Daniel McGarvie McKenzie, 22, was jailed for six months by Sheriff G S Reid at Ayr when he admitted stealing a cheque for £ 117 and defrauding the Savings Bank of Glasgow of £ 110. He admitted a previous conviction for theft.

The court heard the cheque was sent by a solicitor to Robert Milby, 61 Glenburn, Prestwick.

McKenzie went to branches of the Savings Bank in Ayr and Prestwick and withdrew the money using Mr Milby’s name.

McKenzie was traced to Skipton in Yorkshire.

100 YEARS AGO

Coal miners only - choice of any Infantry Regiment.

For a limited period ( about ten days) all infantry regiments are thrown open to coal miners only.

Those who come forward voluntaril­y may attest, and if passed fit for General Service will be accepted for immediate enlistment.

Men between the ages of 19 and 23 were particular­ly asked to come forward and show their patriotism.

Arrangemen­ts will be made to enable comrades to join the same regiment. The Depot, Ayr.
