Drivers set to go parking mad on Troon seafront

About 200 car spaces will be charged for

- Sarah Hilley

Parking charges are causing a storm at Troon seafront. The Post hit the streets to gauge reaction to the charges, which will see drivers pay £ 1 an hour at the Walker Hall, Italian Gardens and Royal Troon Beach Esplanade.

Mum Pamela Buchanan, of Strathaven, visits the town to go horse riding and walk her dog .

The 34- year- old who parks at the seafront by Royal Troon said she may no longer visit the town when charges are introduced.

She said: “We will probably go elsewhere as it is a palaver to have change. We could be out for four hours on the beach.”

Nurse Susan Boyce, 37 , of Troon, said: “I don’t think it is a good idea. It is a shame that the small perks are being taken away.”

Gran Edith McWhirter, 71, from the town, said: “We have been lucky in Troon because we have never had to pay for parking. I think £ 1 is quite a lot. It should be a fixed price. It might put a lot of people of from coming to the town. “Troon is becoming a bit of a ghost town and shops are shutting.”

Marie Muirhead, 61, from Barassie said: “I just think parking will do more damage to the town. I went to Maidens with my husband recently and he said: ‘ great we don’t have to pay for parking.” Folk can expect to pay to park this year.

The Blackburn car park at Ayr Seafront and the Bellevue Road one in Prestwick will also be affected.

South Ayrshire Council expects to generate £ 35,000 in revenue by the time it is in force this year and £ 90,000 a year thereafter.
