Minster’s big vision
Community hub discussed
D al mel ling ton Parish Church will become the star of the town once again if ambitious dreams come to light.
Interim minister Morag Crossan hosted an event on the future of the church on Saturday.
She unveiled a proposal to re- invent the church building to become a community hub. And it is hoped the community will raise £ 50,000 for the historic B listed structure, which will be bolstered by grant funding.
Rev Crossan said there was plenty of enthusiasm at the scout hall meeting.
She said: “Drawings have come back from the architect. We held the community event so everybody can see that. We have launched a fundraising campaign to revamp the inside.” Due to dwindling finances the church hall could no longer be maintained.
But now there are hopes to add a kitchen, new toilets and transform the inside of the church to enclose a hall inside.
Rev Crossan said: “It is a B- listed building so the inside can be changed but not the outside. The building will be for the use of the community. We can find other groups to use the space. It is exciting.”
Dalmellington Church was built in 1846 with Dunaskin sandstone with the red doors said to symbolise the blood of the Covenanters.
Formerly the Kirk o’ The Convenant, it boasts stunning stained glass windows.
Photographer Dave Hancox took this stunning photograph of the church at night.
