Club night makes the top TEN

- Scott Lewis

TEN: The Underground music movement that is reincarnating Ayr town’s spirit.

It is approaching the one- year anniversary since Ewan McVicar started TEN one Monday night in Fury’s Nightclub.

Since then, there have been nine events, including the most recent all- dayer event on Easter Sunday.

From what started as an experiment by a local DJ pursuing his dream, is now the most talked about music event that has hit Ayr since the Hanger 13 days.

The town has been dominated over recent years by fierce competition that has divided residents and had a negative effect on the local nightlife.

Ewan says that TEN should not be viewed as more competition, but rather a way of bringing the town back together to help it thrive again.

He said: “I reckon club ( Club De Mar) shutting down was a bad thing for Ayr, I just want everyone to be more supportive of each other instead of ‘ I’m against you’ and that’s the only way that Ayr is going to be great again - TEN is a collective.”

He said the family- feel at most gigs is due to attendees having a similar outlook, and could be the catalyst which reignites the spark that once put Ayr on the music map.

Ewan added: “TEN is a family of people who have the same passion to make Ayr great again.

“Go back to the street raving days in Ayr and it was like a clubbing mecca and it was massive man, it’s died and it’s a shame.

“The town is dying and even to bring a wee bit of life into it would be amazing.”

The 24- year- old says the music event is not just for young people.

“Everyone is welcome. We are never like ‘ we don’t want you here’.

“I don’t want it just to be [ somewhere] that all the young folk go. I want older people to come too.

“There has been no violence at any of the gigs so far, it is such a friendly atmosphere.”

A TEN loyal, who is extremely passionate about the events, claims it’s about more than just the music.

Ryan Lee, 20, says “It is more than just techno- it’s an experience.

“It’s about friends, it is a movement, a family.

“People go who don’t like the music, but they still go and have a good time.

“Not everyone will like it but nine out of ten, even people not interested in techno, can still have a great time.

“It allows people to be welcomed into a group who may not have been included their whole life.”

Ewan agreed by saying: “Come and be part of something special.”

The next TEN event will be on Friday, May 4 from 10pm - 2.30am at The Newmarket on Newmarket Street in Ayr.

Tickets are £ 10 and can be purchsed from www. residentadvisor. net

The one- year anniversary will be dedicated to and in memory of Ewan’s friend Aaron Crooks, who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Ewan described him as ‘‘ a breath of fresh air who inspired me to start TEN’’.

All profits will be donated to Scottish Association for Mental Health ( SAMH) with an online donation link set up for those unable to attend the event.
