Church Guild celebrate their 125th anniversary

-

They have dedicated a century and a quarter to the Church...

So no wonder the Kirkoswald Guild members decided to celebrate their 125th anniversary. And two VIP Guild members Margaret McCreath and Jean Somerville have completed 50 years of service. Jean, of Maidens, said: “The anniversary celebration was brillant and very busy. We don’t have as many Guild members as before but there is still a good turn- out. Some of our members are gone now.” David Gemmell moderator of the Presbytery of Ayr presented Jean and Margaret with long service certificates. Our photographer went along to capture the event, which saw Jean and Margaret cut the birthday cake in recent weeks. And a special service took place with Rev Gemmell taking to the pulpit. Lady Kennedy spoke about how the Guild was formed locally and how men were worried about their wives attending as it would interfere with teatime. Kirkoswald Guild President Elizabeth Vetch organised the event. General Secretary of the Guild Iain Whyte gave a talk on the national perspective. Kirkoswald Kirk has much to boast about. US President Dwight Eisenhower attended Sunday worship there. And it has also been credited with inspiring Robert Burns to write ‘ To a Louse.. The A- listed Kirkoswald Kirk is also the only church in the country designed by famous architect Robert Adam. Rev Ian Stirling said: “It was a superb day with lots of interesting talks.”
