New graves taking shape at cemetery
The first concrete tombs have been sunk at the Troon Cemetery expansion.
The sealed lairs are needed as the bedrock is not deep enough to satisfy new SEPA ground rules.
The radical solution has never before been used in South Ayrshire.
Despite the extra expense of the concrete, plots will initially be the same price as an earthen lair.
The old mortuary will be saved and the site will have space for the next 30 years.
The tombs are placed right beside each other and are air and water tight once sealed.
It is expected that some will be slightly above the surface, depending on the depth of the bedrock.
