Angry drivers this week told of their shock at South Ayrshire Council raking in £ 1.2m in parking fines.

Our special investigation showed that motorists are most likely to be ticketed in Wellington Square than any other street in South Ayrshire.

Traffic wardens dished a total of 1686 tickets in Wellington Square since May 2014.

The Post visited Wellington Square on Monday to get the public’s reaction to the number of parking tickets issued.

Anne Gordon, 57, of Mossblown, said: “It is shocking. We shouldn’t have to pay to park.

“What are they doing with the £ 1.2m?

“Where is the money going?”

John McGregor, 64, of Prestwick, said he will sign a petition against the parking charges in his town.

“I hate paying parking fines altogether,” he said. They are driving people out of town.”

Driver Andrea William, 38, a tourist from Italy, said the £ 1.2m was a huge sum of money.

“It depends on what they do with the money,” he added.

“I have been walking in Wellingston Square and I have checked the cars and nobody has a ticket.”

Craig Lawless, 40, of Stewarton, East Ayrshire, said the parking charges in South Ayrshire are much cheaper than other areas and the council have to make money some way.

He said: “Thirty pence for 30 minutes is okay particularly if you compare it to £ 1.20 in Glasgow.

“I suppose it depends on how the council spend the £ 1.2m and if they reinvest it in the Ayrshire Road Alliance.

“There are a lot of empty parking spaces in Ayr.

“The area is heavily policed by wardens.”
