Blooming marvellous flower show

-

The organisers of the second Ayr and District Flower Show are growing for gold this year - and have added a full food fair.

The weekend event - over August 18 and 19 - is destined to capitalise on the success of the inagural event at Ayr Racecourse last Summer.

The show schedule with all the detail on classes is available from the show website or from secretary Matt Stewart.

Committee organisers are hoping to grow last year’s 3000 plus crowd.

He revealed this week that “preparations are progressing well.”

All new, and in partnership with Ayr Racecourse, is the Scottish Food Market which will be put on in the Princess Suite.

Matt said: “Last year it was most encouraging of the support and good wishes of the visiting public who were treated to the many diverse features of horticultural displays and competition exhibits.”

The boost at the racecourse is that much of the attractions are under cover, so whatever the weather a great weekend is set.

Temporary cover will also be provided on the show ground for some of the plant traders.

There will be cookery demos, and a hands- on experience of flower arranging,

Matt said: “Also in the Floral Marquee will be the Junior Section Classes for children 5- 8 years and 9 - 12 years, which hopefully, will encourage the growers of tomorrow.”

The Parade Marquee features a Photography Section, also display and trade stands.

There will be musical entertainment throughout on both days provided by artists of all age groups.

Entry has been pegged at just £ 5, free for kids.

Meanwhile the committee are asking all those like- minded gardeners to get in touch to help.

Matt added: “It must be emphasised that the Ayr &; District Flower Show is a non- profit making event and the organisation is carried out by 13 enthusiastic volunteers who form the committee.

“We would like to have more people with horticultural interest or other qualities, to get in touch.”

A fundraising plant/ flower and hanging basket sale will be held on Saturday June 30 in Troon Town Hall.
