Big helpings of Jam for Jonsey on the cards

-

Just three weeks ago, the “Jam For Jonsey” fundraiser seemed like a bit of wishful thinking.

In three days time – this Sunday – the wish comes true.

The original concept was “pitch up, plug in and play” - a chance for local musicians to pay tribute to the late Tom Jones - one of the founders of live music in Ayrshire.

And help raise funds to ease funeral bills that remain unpaid.

Three bands – all with a close connection to TJ the DJ – immediately offered their support.

I met the bands’ representatives last weekend and we’ve come up with a formula that promises a great day of great live music in his honour.

And my thanks to The Rhymes, The Whisky Bandits, Flat Stanley – and local musician John Stuart Cairns - for supplying the necessary equipment that will be FREE to use to all guests musicians.

The action will kick off at The Twa Dugs from 3.00pm this Sunday.

Admission is free – but donations to the Jonesy Fund will be welcome. All bar profits will also go to the fund.

The format is:

3.00 pm – “Pitch up, Plug In and Play!” An open stage with full PA, mics and basic drum kit – and an open invitation to all musicians – as bands or individuals – to perform.

Musicians will be responsible for bringing their own instruments and any extra sound equipment.

Doors open at 12 noon for any musicians to see what equipment is available. Or they can contact me on recordshields@ aol. com

But such is the expected demand that if you want to play – come early!

5.00 – Live on stage THE WHISKY BANDITS Local legends in the great “Piv” days – the band are back together for a special tribute to their lost friend Jonsey.

Huge fans of the band “FREE” – expect to hear many of their classics!

6.30 – Live on stage THE RHYMES: After a nine year gap, the boys - and girl! – are reforming to honour their mentor.

Jonesy released their first CD – “Slang” on his Powerhouse label. And the band hope to play most of the album on this tribute set.

8.00 - Live on stage FLAT STANLEY: Another band who say they owe a huge debt to Tom Jones – and are proud to play a tribute set in his name.

Says Colin Stewart “Tom helped so many people – and was a great friend.

When I called the rest of the band about playing this very special event, I knew the answer before I even asked them.

It’s an honour to be part of this”.

To close the night, the Twa Dugs will be supplying free plays on the “Juke Box” – and inviting people to put on any record that they associate with TJ the DJ.

My personal thanks to all who helped get this event up and running.

Hopefully, it will be a night everyone who knew Jonesy will be proud of.

See you all there!
