Headmistress of Marr College quits

Candidates circle as her £ 72,804 successor

- Stephen Houston

The hunt is on for a replacement for Marr College’s headmistress who has announced she’s quitting.

Elaine McGregor- Sloman, who is over 60, has been at the helm for nearly seven years since moving from Peebles High.

The closing date for applications for her job - which carries a whopping £ 72,804 salary - was last night ( Tuesday.)

Her retirement comes after a recent period in which she was marked long- term absent from work for personal reasons.

Six months ago she sadly missed out on the offical opening by education secretary John Swinney of the £ 35 million new Marr College.

And early last year she was at the centre of a row with Troon Community Council for not replying to letters.

But during her reign Marr climbed the league table to be ranked top in South Ayrshire for exam results.

The current roll of around 900 is expected to dramatically increase over the new few years due to the hundreds of new homes being built in the town.

Education director Douglas Hutchison paid tribute on her retirement.

He said: “Elaine has been the right person at the right time for Marr College and I’d like to wish her well for the future.

“She has led the school very well through a period of significant change with a major refurbishment recently completed.

“Under her leadership, Marr College is well placed to deliver outstanding education for future generations.

“We are currently recruiting to fill the position which offers the right candidate an exciting opportunity to build on the existing legacy.”

The South Ayrshire Council job advert claims the job entails just 35 hours a YEAR. That works out at £ 2080 an hour, not bad if you can get it.

In the brief they say: “We are seeking to appoint a Head Teacher with the vision, drive, energy and commitment to continue to improve the school and achieve the highest standards of excellence for all young people. “Our vision and ambition in South Ayrshire is excellence and equity.”

Parent Council chairman Hilary Ramage said: “I would like to thank Mrs Macgregor Sloman for working hard and leaving Marr in a much improved position.

“H o p e f u l l y h e r replacement will build on the current positive momentum and use the fantastic new learning spaces to their full advantage to make Marr even better.”
