Stage tribute to Celtic’s victory of ‘ 67

- Lochlin Highet

Football fans can take a trip back in time as Isosceles Theatre Company presents On Our Way to Lisbon at Cumnock Town Hall on Thursday, May 31.

Described as ‘ a two- man play with a cast of thousands’, On Our Way to Lisbon tells the story of the 1967 European Cup, when Glasgow Celtic became the first British team to win the trophy with a famous victory over the mighty Inter Milan.

Written by Patrick Prior and directed by Jim Dunk, join two fans as they look back and fondly recreate how the Bhoys in green and white beat the team who were hailed as unbeatable.

Actors Pat Abernethy and Dave Marsden play all of the characters - players, crowds, commentators and managers - in a masterpiece of storytelling, including some hilarious slow- motion sequences.

The glory of the victory is set against the drab reality of the pair’s Glasgow existence.

Was Celtic’s historic win the best moment of their lives?

Over the last few years, the play has thrilled audiences in Scotland, Ireland, England and Las Vegas, gathering rave reviews, awards and standing ovations.

The show has obvious appeal for football fans, but for those with little interest in the game, it stands as a stunning piece of theatre for all.

So dig out your scarf, dust off your passport and relive the memories as Celtic steam- roller over the best teams in Europe to become the immortal Lisbon Lions.

The show begins at 7.30pm and tickets, £ 10/£8, are available from eastayrshireleisure.com, Cumnock Town Hall on 1290 421028, or the Palace Theatre box office on 01563 554900.
