Tammy’s £ 80k garden green light

Outdoor serving proposal survives noise objection

- Stuart Wilson

A town centre pub’s bid to open its own beer garden has survived a late objection from noise police.

Ayr’s historic Tam O’Shanter Inn will invest up to £ 80,000 in the al fresco patio to the rear of its property.

The boozer, run by David and Mareena Cowan, had gained council planning permission last month.

But environmental health bosses this week said a “high chance of noise issues” was causing concern.

“It would be remiss of us not to make an objection on these grounds,” they added.

Pub boss David, addressing South Ayrshire’s licensing board, said: “We totally understand the concerns.

“But there will be no music played and this is purely and simply about serving teas, coffees and beer until the 10pm curfew.”

David said the beer garden would, in the short term, be self- contained at the back of the Inn, which first opened in 1749.

A longer term plan to gain access from the rear of the bar/ restaurant would then be put in place.

He added: “We see this as a good chance to generate extra employment for around five or six people.

“The investment will run to between £ 70,000 and £ 80,000 – and not many people are investing in Ayr town centre at the moment.”

David confirmed that six CCTV cameras would be installed to monitor the beer garden for security.

He said: “We envisage it being a safer environment than at present, as there can be quite a few issues there.

“Perhaps this will encourage any undesirables to go elsewhere.”

A limited range of draft beers, wines and spirits will be available at the bar, said David with all other alcohol served inside the traditional pub.

Licensing board member, council leader Douglas Campbell, said: “It is welcome investment for the town centre and I’m sure it will be properly supervised.”

The decision to approve the license was approved unanimously.
