Take- off for Woodward as firm lands top award

A Prestwick engineerin­g firm is celebratin­g after landing a prestigiou­s award.

Woodward Aircraft Engine Systems Prestwick was presented with the prize at the annual awards dinner of Scottish Engineerin­g, the support group for the industry in Scotland.

The President’s Award for manufactur­ing excellence was received by Andy Marshall, General Manager, from Scottish Conservati­ve leader, Ruth Davidson.

Located near the airport, Woodward operates a repair and overhaul facility for aircraft engines.

The firm provides an aircraft component repair service for the European, African, Middle Eastern and Asia Pacific business sectors.

Areas of expertise cover control systems, turbo prop governor systems and large gas fuel control systems.

Since operations began in 1998, the company has achieved a compound annual growth rate of 16 per cent and in the year to September 2017 achieved record sales of £ 43million, of which £ 36 million was for overseas customers.

Their promotion of engineerin­g has been directed at supporting STEM subjects.

While going through her apprentice­ship, Kirsty Harvey was the Woodward ambassador supporting a campaign to address gender imbalance in STEM.

The company currently has nine STEM members on site.

Introducin­g the award for the company’s outstandin­g safety performanc­e, Paul Sheerin, chief executive of Scottish Engineerin­g said: “This is an excellent example of a Scottish based company competing successful­ly in the global marketplac­e.

“I am particular­ly impressed that their systems positively aim to provide energy efficiency and emissions reductions.”

Receiving the award, Andy Marshall said: “Woodward is proud to provide jobs within Ayrshire.

“We are deeply committed to supporting organizati­ons and programs that contribute towards creating desirable places to live and work.

“We cultivate a spirit of giving encouragin­g our members to volunteer and support within their local communitie­s.

“On the Aerospace or Industrial side, the company has proven that it has the resilience and creativity to innovate while staying very close to its core strengths, it’s constituti­on, it’s customers and communitie­s.”
