Upside Doon star Roddy is at home with Burns

- Lochlin Highet

Headlined by the Idlewild frontman, Roddy Woomble, Upside Doon Music Festival, will take place on June 23, in the gardens of the National Trust for Scotland’s award-winning Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway.

It’s been more than 10 years since Roddy, from Irvine, released his debut album, ‘My Secret Is My Silence’ and his latest work, which he will perform at the festival, has seen Roddy take a darker more lo-fi direction, held together by his trademark poetic lyrics.

He said: “I love a festival that’s smaller and boutique and that’s why I prefer performing at festivals like Upside Doon.

“I’m a huge Burns fan as he’s an emblem of what’s good about Scotland. He’s a master of language and I’m a romantic like he was.”

After launching in 2016, Upside Doon is the National Trust for Scotland’s only regular outdoor music festival.

Held in the atmospheric gardens of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, the family-friendly festival doubled in size last year, and is on track to be a success in 2018.

Created and curated by Robert Burns Birthplace Museum’s Claire Grant, the festival is a refreshing mix of Scottish and local acts.

After wow-ing at Upside Doon last year, West Dunbartonshire six-piece Have Mercy Las Vegas are back in Alloway playing their trademark mix of folk-blues Americana.

Also in the line-up are Pop/ Rock band, Patersani, fronted by brothers Craig and Dave Paterson.

Anna Sweeney is back on the music map, and better than ever.

Her comeback came in October 2017, with no less than two live debuts in Nashville, the ensuing announcement of her debut album, and several subsequent electrifying live shows around Scotland and at Celtic Connections 2018.

Fast-forward to Spring 2018, and Anna is working towards festival season with her band, planning her next release, and enjoying the success of her self-produced debut album, GAME FACE.

Likened to Taylor Swift, HAIM, and even Joni Mitchell at times, Anna has an undeniable talent for songwriting across several genres including pop, blues and country.

The latest addition to the line-up is flame-haired songstress Sophie Rogers who has both a sold out EP and album under her belt.

Her music is Caledonia soul with folk/pop influences, bold lyrics and strong mainstream appeal.

Completing the line-up is Glasgow’s Brownbear.

The festival kicks off at 4pm on June 23 with tickets starting from £18.50 and family from £60.
