Tam ‘ o Shanter marks 25 years
In Ayr, the Tam O’Shanter pub is historically known as the pub to go to for a great atmosphere and a heat at the fire!
This landmark pub, the oldest licensed one in Ayr, dating back to 1749, with its thatched roof is a must visit venue for lovers of Burns.
And in the dark winter nights, it doesn’t take many people in this cosy pub to make sure there is a brilliant atmosphere to be had.
“There is always a warm atmosphere and it’s not just thanks to the coal fire,” said coowner Marena Cowan.
“There is nothing better than everyone around the bar, sharing stories over a drink.”
It was 25 years ago that George and David Cowan walked past the site and said to each other, “that would make a great pub, right in the centre of the town,” they haven’t looked back.
It’s now the only free house in the High Street and has regulars who travel all the way from Ireland for race meetings and always pop in for a tipple and some of the homely pub food on the Tam O’Shanter menu.
Generations of visitors arrive to say hello and enjoy a dram with old friends.
And the beer garden offers a must visit suntrap during the summer months.
Very much a traditional pub, Tam O’Shanter Inn is not afraid of moving with the times, that is part of its success.
The gantry now boasts over 20 gins and an extensive range of whisky that Burns himself would enjoy sampling.
And they are looking to develop their restaurant with plans for a gastro- pub style menu next year.
For a warm, friendly, family pub with a well stocked gantry, delicious home cooked meals and of course, a seat at the coal fire, head to the Tam O’Shanter Inn where you will be always be made to feel welcome in this cosy pub that Burns himself would have been proud to be his local.
