New roof for beloved school

Ayrshire Post - - Around Ayr - Abi Smillie

A primary school burned in a massive blaze has welcomed a new roof.

Pupils, staff and parents were devastated when Ballantrae Primary caught fire back in June, just weeks before closing up for summer.

But the building was given a new lease of life last week as it said hello to a new roof and windows as work continued on refurbing the school.

Fifty- eight P1- P7 pupils continue to make the daily commute to Girvan Primary, where they were relocated following the blaze.

The fire – contained within the main school building – caused extensive damage to the existing classroom and early years provision at the school.

And around 30 firefighters tackled the flames on the morning of Monday, June 4.

Ballantrae pupils are excited to see their new school.

A council spokesman said: “Work is progressing well with the new roof now completed and window replacement now underway.

“The building’s expected to be wind and water tight by next week after which we’ll will begin drying out the building.

“Meanwhile, in the extension, new flooring is being laid with this work scheduled to be completed this month.”
