Panic of the pooch owners

Huge concerns over ocean mystery

- Pippa Smith

Terrified dog walkers removed their pets from the beach... after the Ayrshire Post told them of the dangers that have surfaced recently.

They missed the tiny warnings placed on the promenade bins and did not know of the dangers.

An Ayr resident who regularly walks along the low green and asked not to be named, said: “A dog walker warned us and our dogs aren’t on the beach because of it.

“There has actually been a colony of swans that have died and they were always on the beach.

“I have been walking here for 14 years and the swans have always been there – maybe there’s something that is in the water that has washed up due to the recent weather.

“My dog was unwell on Saturday but she is fine now – it could have been anything but the following day when I heard about this from the dog walkers then I thought that could have been why she wasn’t feeling well.”

Karen Armstrong added: “Personally I wouldn’t let my dogs on the beach – the council have seemingly put signs up to warn people about what has been happening.

“This could really be anywhere if dogs have taken unwell the tides must be dragging it along.

“People have been saying that it’s coming off the boats but I’m not taking any chances with my dogs.

“At first I thought it could be something to do with the white frothy stuff you see on the beach but I think it could be Palm Oil – I do worry about it.”

James Broadfoot, who was visiting Ayr with his grandchildren Finlay and Emma Ronald, was not aware of the warnings.

He said: “We do come here quite often and I haven’t heard about this – obviously it is very worrying as Teddy is still a puppy, he’s only six months old. We can’t even let him off the leash which is a good thing because it means we can keep an eye on him.”

Alex and Terry Nall were visiting from Newcastle.

Terry said: “We have been to the beach quite a few times this week while we’re on holiday – we didn’t hear anything about what had happened to the dogs on the beach. I think we are going to clear off now that you’ve told us.”
