Vet surgeries packed with sick dogs

- Pippa Smith

Vets have been inundated with sick dogs, we can reveal.

the pets appear “sedated” and in a state of “paralysis” according to their owners.

Collier And Brock Veterinary surgery with bureau in Ayr and troon and Dalblair Veterinary surgery issued warnings asking dog owners to be vigilant after a number of dogs had fallen ill.

staff at the Corner Vet Centre in Girvan also reported a spike in sick dogs. Fortunately all of the dogs have fully recovered.

David Galbraith, the Clinical Director of Collier and Brock Vetinary, explained: “One of our cases was a dog who had fallen ill after being walked on Ayr Beach on October 15.

“symptoms were sudden in onset and the dog appeared very drowsy and sedated.

“Over the day we became aware of other affected dogs and posted a general message for owners to be aware that there may be an issue with the beaches.

“At present we do not know what the cause is and whether or not more than one beach is affected.

“As far as I am aware all affected dogs have recovered with supportive treatment and time and we have not heard of any further cases after the October 16.”

Environment agency sEPA is also aware of the dog drama, confirming a “number of dogs have become unwell.”

A spokesman said: “sEPA is aware that precautionary signage has been deployed at Ayr Beach by south Ayrshire Council, following reports that a number of dogs have become unwell. sEPA officers have confirmed with the council’s Environmental Health team that there are no known reports of pollution or incidents which might have impacted on the beach area.”
