A man who attempted to “conflict pain” on a police officer has avoided jail.

Connor Millar, of Oakwood Avenue Ayr, admitted at the town’s sheriff court last week to assaulting two police officers and repeatedly shouting and swearing on July 20 this year at Birch terrace and Peidmont Road in Girvan.

the court heard how the 22- year- old pushed one police officer and “grabbed” another officer by the knee and “squeezed” in an attempt to cause injury.

Depute fiscal Lindzi Baynes explained: “It was 6am when the witness was sleeping and was woken up by loud knocking on his door – it was the accused.

“He was shouting and swearing at the time, asking for keys.

“the witness was alarmed by the shouting, which continued for around 10 minutes before he was seen to leave. the police had already been contacted.

“On entering a road nearby, the officers observed the accused to be agitated and then proceeded to stop to speak to him.

“At this point, he pushed one of the officers on the body and grabbed the other police officer by the knee and squeezed in an attempt to conflict pain.”

Defence solicitor Peter Lockhart said that Millar had recently moved to Ayr from Girvan and is living in temporary accomodation.

sheriff Mhairi Mactaggart said: “I am at the point where I have to think about a custodial sentence – but I am going to step back from that today and place you on a community payback order.

“You are going to be montiored on this so I want you to remember that this is an alternative to custody.”
